During the Rotten Autumn event in Mortal Shell, players can change the appearance of any of the shells and the unshelled style using food and music.

The Tiel Slytherin Shell Shade in Mortal Shell

If there has ever been a perfect game to get the Halloween event treatment, it's Mortal Shell. The gritty, Soulslike indie hit has players control a wraithlike being called The Foundling who can enter and use the corpses of fallen warriors. They then need to fight all manner of creepy and downright terrifying creatures in Fallgrim like eyeless, vampiric Nocteserpers and demonic, froglike Brosca. The Rotten Autumn Halloween event just recently launched, introducing a new giant frog NPC named Gorf and a host of new content, including a boss music pack, new photo mode, and new colors for every shell, called Shades.

For the first time, players can customize any shell The Foundling is using, but the process of getting there is a little obscure. As with most things in Mortal Shell, players more or less stumble across this feature, discovering it and becoming more familiar with it alongside their character. There are ten total Shades introduced in the update, with two for each shell and two for The Foundling's unshelled form. To unlock each one, players are going to need some food, their lute, and to find Gorf. Here's how to unlock every shell Shade during the Rotten Autumn event in Mortal Shell.

Unlock Shades in Mortal Shell

A player feeds Gorf, a giant Frog, in Mortal Shell

The process for unlocking Shades appears random at first, and somewhat disgusting. Players need to feed Gorf, then play their lute around him. Gorf will appear to vomit on the character, changing the shell Shade based upon what he ate.

Players can feed Gorf Roasted Rat, which is easily accessible as a drop from enemies and available for purchase from Vlas for 100 Tar. They can also use Rotten Food or Rotten Gourds, though these can be more difficult to find. It is possible to change Shades using only Roasted Rat, but it will take a lot of them. The food required to get each shell Shade appears below:

Harros, The Vassal Shades

  • Sun Vassal: Black with Gold trim. Feed Gorf 5 Roasted Rat, then play the lute near him.
  • Burden Keeper: Gold with Black trim. Feed Gorf 10 Roasted Rat or 4 Rotten Food or 1 Rotten Gourd, then play the lute near him.

  • The Count: Red with Black trim. Feed Gorf 5 Roasted Rat, then play the lute near him.
  • Kvlt: White with Black trim. Feed Gorf 10 Roasted Rat or 4 Rotten Food or 1 Rotten Gourd, then play the lute near him.

Eredrim, The Venerable Shades

  • Yellow King: Yellow with Black trim. Feed Gorf 5 Roasted Rat, then play the lute near him.
  • Anointed Butcher: White with Black trim and Red accents. Feed Gorf 10 Roasted Rat or 4 Rotten Food or 1 Rotten Gourd, then play the lute near him.

Tiel, the Acolyte Shades

  • Slytherin: White with Black, Green, and Gold trim. Feed Gorf 5 Roasted Rat, then play the lute near him.
  • Serpent's Lust: Red with Black and Gold trim. Feed Gorf 10 Roasted Rat or 4 Rotten Food or 1 Rotten Gourd, then play the lute near him.
The Super Meat Boi Shade for the Unshelled character in Mortal Shell

Unshelled Foundling Shades

  • Super Meat Boi: Red. Feed Gorf 5 Roasted Rat, then play the lute near him.
  • Aurum Ascendant: Gold. Feed Gorf 10 Roasted Rat or 4 Rotten Food or 1 Rotten Gourd, then play the lute near him.

To revert to the previous Shade, players should feed Gorf whatever they fed him to get their current Shade.

When players change shells, they will appear in the crypt in their default style, but as soon as the player equips one, it will return to whichever Shade the player had changed it to.
