Despite its overwhelming popularity, Netflix decided that Julie and the Phantoms season 2 wasn't going to happen which left fans devastated.

Summary

  • Despite positive reviews and three Daytime Emmy Awards, Netflix decided not to renew "Julie and the Phantoms" for a second season, leaving fans disappointed.
  • The first season ended with a cliffhanger, leaving many unanswered questions and indicating that the show was meant to continue with further storylines.
  • The show's creators had plans for a second season, including exploring the ghosts' desire to share their music with the world, but unfortunately, those plans will never come to fruition due to the cancellation.

Though it was a vibrant and original addition to Netflix's massive library of shows, Julie and the Phantoms season 2 never materialized and the series was canceled after only one season. The musical comedy-drama television series was based on the Brazilian show Julie e os Fantasmas and was created by Dan Cross and David Hoge and executive produced by Kenny Ortega, who had previously signed a multi-year deal with Netflix. Additionally, Ortega directed a majority of the nine episodes in season 1, which premiered on September 10, 2020.

The cast of Julie and the Phantoms included Madison Reyes as Julie Molina, Charlie Gillespie as Luke, Owen Patrick Joyner as Alex, Jeremy Shada as Reggie, Jadah Marie as Flynn, Sacha Carlson as Nick, Savannah May as Carrie, Cheyenne Jackson as Caleb Covington, Carlos Ponce as Ray Molina, Sonny Bustamante as Carlos Molina, Alison Araya as Aunt Victoria, Marci T. House as Mrs. Harrison, and Booboo Stewart as Willie. Although they were only together for nine short episodes, the cast's chemistry is part of what made the series so great. Plus, its writing, musical numbers, and corny jokes made it a feel-good show that ended way too soon.

Netflix Decided Not To Renew Julie And The Phantoms For Season 2

Although the show received rave reviews from critics and fans alike and won three Daytime Emmy Awards, Netflix waited more than a year to make a concrete decision on Julie and the Phantoms season 2. The streaming service announced that it would not go forward with a second season for the show on December 18, 2021. Given that it took so long to hear its fate, many believed that cancelation was the inevitable outcome for the supernatural musical television series prior to the news.

Unfortunately, Netflix is notorious for canceling its shows after only one season despite their popularity, and the streaming service rarely gives explanations for its decisions. The COVID-19 pandemic may have had a hand in Julie and the Phantoms ending prematurely. Or Netflix was expecting the show to perform better than it did (even though it was undoubtedly one of the more popular series on the platform at the time of its premiere).

Julie And The Phantoms Wasn't Supposed To End With Season 2

The Julie and the Phantoms season 1 finale (aka its series finale) ended on a cliffhanger. Luke, Alex, and Reggie believed they would cross over into the afterlife since they thought they had completed their unfinished business by performing with Julie at the Orpheum. However, they never crossed over, and somehow, Luke, Alex, and Reggie were able to touch and hug Julie, and their curse from Caleb was lifted. It was unclear whether that meant the ghosts had been brought back to life, but that was a question left to be answered in the nonexistent Julie and the Phantoms season 2. Plus, Caleb possessed Nick in the last moments of the episode, unbeknownst to Julie.

Given the events of Julie and the Phantoms season 1, episode 9, it was clear that the show was meant to continue. The first season left many questions unanswered, and it seemed as though the series' writers and producers had plans for more stories in a second season. However, Netflix decided one season was enough for the musical comedy-drama television show.

What We Know About Julie And The Phantoms Season 2 Plans

Show creators David Hoge and Dan Cross teased their plans for a theoretical Julie and the Phantoms season 2 during an interview with TVLine in September 2021. They said:

"If we are lucky enough to get a second season, the ghosts would have a lot going on. They've always wanted to get their music out there for the world to hear. Like Luke always says, they want that connection with their audience. A number one album? Song at the top of the charts? Whatever it takes to be remembered for their music. But as you saw at the very end, there are still plenty of obstacles to get in their way. And now it seems there's an 'obstacle' in the inner circle."

Sadly, the world will never see these storylines come to life. Following the show's cancelation, fans took to social media to start a campaign to save the series. Their efforts were fruitless, though, and it seems Julie and the Phantoms season 2 was not meant to be.
